Can you explain the working mechanism of a PCB relay?

To understand how PCB relay works, we first need to understand its internal structure, only after having a full understanding of its structure, we can understand its function.

The internal structure of a pcb relay consists of a coil, an armature, and contacts. The coil is the key component of the relay and generates a magnetic field when current passes through it. The armature is a movable piece of metal that is attracted to the magnetic field generated by the coil. A typical relay has two sets of contacts: normally open (NO) contacts and normally closed (NC) contacts.

Now that you know his structure, you can recognize how it works.

It is presented in two cases.

  • When the power is off:

    No current flows on the relay coil, the armature is at rest and the normally closed contacts are closed, so the circuit is closed loop.

  • During energized state:

    There is current flowing on the relay coil, generating a signal, the coil produces a magnetic field, attracting the armature and changing the state of the contacts, the normally open contacts close and current will flow through the circuit.
