How Does PCB Relay Work?


PCB relays provide isolated control of high voltage/high current circuits by triggering internal coils or semiconductor elements with control signals to actuate contacts to open and close, or electronic switches to turn on and off. Electromagnetic types utilize magnetic suction to switch mechanical contacts, while solid-state (SSR) types rely on optocouplers/semiconductors for contactless switching, combining compactness, low noise, and high life.


Working Principle


  1. De - energized State

    When there is no current flowing through the relay coil, the armature is in its resting position. In this state, the normally closed contacts are closed, completing the circuit they are part of. For example, if the relay is used in a simple lighting circuit and the normally closed contacts are connected to a light bulb, the light bulb will be on because the circuit is complete.
  2. Energized State

    As the armature moves towards the coil, it causes the contacts to change state. The normally open contacts close, allowing current to flow through the circuit they are connected to. For example, the second light bulb connected to the normally open contacts will turn on because the circuit is now complete.
